If you said “My dog would love you”, a logical follow up question would be “Oh, what’s his name?” If you said “My dog would have loved you”, a logical follow up question would be “Oh no, what changed? Why not now?” The second one doesn’t necessarily mean death, maybe it means you had to give the dog away due to moving into an apartment with a no-pet policy or something. But talking about an agent, like a dog, in the past tense prepares the listener to hear the follow up, that he died. That’s not so with the first form. With the first form, you have already strongly implied that it is possible for the dog to still love you, by using the present tense to talk about that possibility. When you follow that up by saying that the reason why he cannot love you today is because he is dead, that may be perfectly true, but it is jarring to the listener because you had previously spoken as if the dog loving you was still a possibility today. The result of the first form is thus actually to reflect back, like an echo, the actual situation of discovering that the dog is dead, by leading the listener to assume the dog is alive, only to immediately tell them that the dog is dead.

My vote goes to Thin Lizzy. Fantastic band that started out as a trio singing Irish ballads that morphed into a hard rock quartet with twin lead guitars and a powerful singer Phil Lynott, who also happened to be a badass bass player and songwriter. Thin Lizzy influenced a generation of musicians including another Irish quartet that you might have heard of—U2. It was basically bad luck (some of it self-inflicted) that Thin Lizzy wasn’t bigger in the Not all heroes wear capes essential workers #NurseLife shirt, Not all heroes wear capes essential workers #CNAlife shirt, custom text shirt also I will do this United States. When Thin Lizzy made it with their biggest hit “The Boys Are Back in Town,” they were set to tour the U.S. in support of their then-latest album “Jailbreak” and hopefully take it by storm, but Lynott fell ill from hepatitis and they had to cancel. When Lynott overcame his illness, they were set to tour the U.S. again in December of 1976, but bad luck occurred again when guitarist Brian Robertson injured his hand in a fight and once again the tour had to be postponed. Still, in that time, they managed to record and release arguably one of the greatest live albums of all time “Live and Dangerous.” After that, Thin Lizzy could never regain their footing in the U.S. and was pretty much “cult status” here, but they were still superstars worldwide and they continued to crank out quality songs and albums with some great (but at times ever-changing guitarists with Robertson, Eric Moore, Midge Ure, Snowy White and John Sykes). Only Scott Gorham was the other constant along with Lynott and one of rock’s most underrated drummers, Brian Downey. Unfortunately it was all to end for Thin Lizzy in 1983, and all thoughts of a reformation ended when Lynott died in 1986. One of the most talented songwriters ever.
